Belbin Team Roles in Action

Nobody's perfect, but a team can be.

The aim

To appreciate the nine key Team Roles and to use this knowledge to create a balanced, effective team.

About the programme

"This is the first video to make Belbin's concepts readily accessible."

Patrick Hare - Director, Impact Training

Good managers understand that people bring more to a team than just their skills and experience, they bring their individual working styles as well. Making the most of each person's behavioural strengths adds immensely to both group and personal performance, making for a balanced, effective team.

This video dramatises Dr Meredith Belbin’s Team Role theory. Each of the nine Team Roles is identified, defined and shown in action. The dramatisation illustrates that each team member has Team Role preferences as well as a functional role (for example, marketing or accounts). Team Roles are critical to the team’s success.

Dr. Belbin explains that teams with fewer members may need people to perform dual roles. He shows how behavioural skills can be assessed and how, with care, teams can be constructed to take account of hierarchies, as well as personal interaction.

The benefits

  • Illustrates skills for team building, meetings and project management
  • True-to-life scenario backed by Belbin’s credibility
  • Structure and key points of theory are clearly explained

How to use this film

Dr. Meredith Belbin says:

"This film offers an ideal way of quickly introducing team concepts to a fairly large group of participants. Interactive discussion can be stimulated by asking participants to register one vote by raising a hand to indicate who they would choose to work with in order to improve their personal effectiveness. Each character in the film is then considered in turn. The votes cast for each character tell you something about the group as a whole. The reasons why people make completely different choices can then be explored."
