Selecting the Perfect Team

Selecting the Perfect Team

Utilising resources to best effect

The best-qualified person may not be the best person for the job.

The aim

Learn the skills to ensure that recruitment yields a perfect fit, for both function and Team Roles.

About the programme

Selecting the Perfect Team is based upon the theory of Dr. Meredith Belbin and provides support for managers involved in selection. Belbin’s research indicates that recruitment can be more successful when managers search for people within their own organisation, since these people are likely to fit more readily into existing teams.

In this film, project manager Sam (Philip McGough) recruits a spectacularly qualified candidate to replace a much-valued team member. But the newcomer is a disaster. Sam then calls in HR expert Tania, who identifies the Team Role required to balance the team.

By appreciating the difference between eligibility and suitability, those recruiting can look for candidates who are a perfect fit for both the functional position and the Team Roles required. As the drama unfolds, it is revealed that impressive qualifications, glowing references and dynamic interview techniques may be red herrings, concealing a Team Role mismatch.

Managers will learn to identify the balance of Team Roles required for an effective team. This may mean looking at internal, as well as external candidates, even though the former may not appear to be eligible at first. Following the theory will help managers avoid costly recruitment decisions and select more suitable candidates.

The benefits

  • Complements recruitment and management skills training

How to use this film

Dr. Meredith Belbin says:

“This film should be of greatest interest to those already knowledgeable on team roles. Discussion should focus on the principal Team Roles portrayed by the characters in a film. Once a consensus is reached, the discussion leader will point out how easily a balanced team can become unbalanced. Attention should be drawn to the team role potential of those in jobs for which they may not be fully suited. Participants are encouraged to cite instances of people who, without being fully 'eligible', have successfully moved from one job to another. The discussion should then focus on individuals who might be 'discovered' within the organisation for jobs for which they might be better suited."
