Belbin Get Set - testing for young people

Belbin Get Set report cover

Get Set is the Belbin® profile for young people who are on their way to a first job. It is an effective way to help students on the way to further education, higher education and ultimately, the world of work. It aims to enhance self-awareness and help the student, whatever the stage of their academic career, to make their own informed choices when it comes to taking the next step.

Will Get Set make career predictions?

Get Set doesn't rule any career paths in or out. Rather, it aims to give students the self-awareness to make an informed choice about what sort of work will be the best fit for them.

Lots of advisory tests focus on determining suitable careers or jobs for students at 16-18, making predictions based on GCSE qualifications alone. These tests take no account of any intervening years of study, taking the student straight from GCSE to a job role. Get Set takes account of the fact that qualifications and preferences may change. It seeks to bring out the potential strengths of each individual and relate these to the various challenges that lie beyond the world of education. BelbinŽ Team Roles give students (and those in the world of work alike) a language to talk about their strengths and weaknesses. This language is immensely valuable, because it illustrates abilities without depending on qualifications.

Get Set profiling

What ages is it suitable for?

Get Set gives advice to anyone between the ages of 14 and 23. Because it does not rely on any experience of the workplace, it is suitable for school or university students, as well as for graduates looking for a first job.

It gave some very valuable pointers on how to speak in interviews and how I come across to different people. - Lindsey

Curriculum Requirements

The profile and teambuilding combine to meet four of the six key skills laid down in the 2005 Education and Skills white paper:

  • Communication
  • Working with others
  • Improving own learning and performance
  • Problem solving

How does it work?

In the first instance, individuals complete a questionnaire which asks them to investigate their responses to different situations they are likely to have encountered. If desired, they can then ask up to six family members, friends and teachers to add an observer assessment, feedback which enhances their Team Role Profile.

I think that it [Get Set] is a great idea. My counselling report really seemed to be ‘me’ rather than any one else! I think that it gave some phrases that were very useful on UCAS forms, in interviews and will be on my CVs too, about leadership skills etc. - Amy

Get Set is based on the original Belbin® Team Roles, derived from over nine years of research at Henley Management College. They are now used in thousands of companies across the world. During his research, Meredith Belbin discovered that the most successful teams were not those with the highest intellect, but those balanced in Team Roles. Meredith identified nine Team Roles, each of which provided a unique contribution to a team situation.
